Barham Down

Barendown, Bareon Downe

Barham down is an area located near the village of Barham, which is southeast of Canterbury in the county of Kent, England.

In the Stanzaic Morte Arthur and in Malory, the site of the second battle between Arthur and Mordred, in which many good knights were slain. This followed the battle of Dover and preceded the final battle at Salisbury.

Roman Period
During the Roman occupation of Britain, which began in the first century AD, the area that is now Kent and Barham Down was part of the Roman province of Britannia. Watling Street, a major Roman road, runs through the region, including Barham Down.

Migration Period | 5th – 7th centuries
With the decline of the Roman rule in the fifth century, Britain experienced migrations and invasions by various Germanic and Anglo-Saxon tribes. The area underwent changes as Anglo-Saxon settlers established themselves.

Early Medieval Period | 8th – 9th centuries
The early medieval period saw the consolidation of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in different regions, including Kent. The Christianization of the Anglo-Saxons continued during this time, with the establishment of churches and monastic communities.
