Here Galahad and his companions, Perceval and Bors, killed the three incestuous and wicked sons of Count Ernol (Hernox), who had raped and murdered their own sister and imprisoned their father. After his rescue, the count died in Galahad’s arms.
Carteloise Castle is in the Marches of Scotland. It would be on the west coast, near the border between Scotland and England. Here, where Glennie would be most helpful, he is silent. Port Carlisle might be a fair choice for Carteloise, but it is hard to see how Hernox’s sons could have pursued their evil course with such impunity so near one of Arthur’s court cities, unless the King had not been there on his progress for some time.
Phyllis Ann Karr places Carteloise somewhere on the Solway Firth. It should probably be not too close to King Pellam’s territory of Listeneise; yet we do seem to be in Grail territory, for, after leaving Carteloise Castle, Galahad and his companions entered a waste forest where they encountered very holy visions.
Perhaps Carteloise could be identified with Workington, Maryport, or Allonby; or, on the Scotland side of the Solway, Kirkendbright or Southerness.
