The Other Gawain

Introduction#

Aamanz, known as “the other Gawain” for his striking resemblance to Sir Gawain, is a tragic figure from Heinrich von dem Türlin’s Diu Crône. He pursued the knight Gigamec, who had slain his brother, determined to avenge this loss. Along the way, another knight, Zedoech, intercepted Aamanz and challenged him to combat.

Sir Gawain happened upon the encounter just as Aamanz was about to deliver a fatal blow. Gawain engaged in the duel and defeated Aamanz. Yet, refusing to yield fully, Aamanz was turned over to Zedoech and Gigamec. In a cruel twist, they murdered him immediately after Gawain departed.

Gigamec then carried Aamanz’s head to King Arthur’s court, claiming it was Gawain’s. This deception caused confusion and distress among the knights, highlighting the tragic consequences of mistaken identity and the violent, honor-bound world of Arthurian chivalry.
