Introduction#
Abadan was a heathen warrior who fought against King Arthur in the Middle English romance Arthour and Merlin. He appears during Arthur’s early campaigns against the pagan invaders threatening Britain.
The First Battle of Carhaix#
Abadan took part in the first battle of Carhaix, one of the conflicts fought during Arthur’s struggle against his enemies.
During the battle, he encountered Sir Lucan, one of Arthur’s most trusted companions and a prominent knight of the king’s household. Lucan slew Abadan in combat.
Significance#
Abadan is a minor character whose role is limited to a single battle episode. Like many named warriors in medieval battle narratives, he serves to emphasize the scale of the conflict and the prowess of Arthur’s champions.
His death at Lucan’s hands contributes to the reputation of Arthur’s loyal knight as a formidable warrior on the battlefield.
