Introduction#

Achen is named in Culhwch and Olwen as the father of Gusg, one of the many warriors associated with King Arthur’s court.

In Welsh Tradition#

Although no deeds or adventures are attributed to Achen himself, his inclusion in the genealogy of Arthur’s companions reflects the importance of family connections and lineage in Welsh Arthurian tradition.

The heroes and warriors listed in Culhwch and Olwen are frequently identified through their fathers and family relationships. Such genealogical references helped establish a character’s heritage, status, and place within the wider Arthurian world.

Achen survives in the tradition primarily through his connection to Gusg, whose name is preserved among Arthur’s companions.
