Acquitain
An astrologer and dwarf at King Mark's court who uncovered the love affair between Tristan and Isolde.
Introduction#
Acquitain is a dwarf and astrologer who appears in Eilhart von Oberge’s Tristrant. Through his skill in astrology, he gained a place at the court of King Mark, where he became one of the principal opponents of Tristan and Isolde.

Astrologer at Mark’s Court#
Acquitain’s role in the romance closely parallels that of Frocin in Béroul’s Tristan and Melot in Gottfried von Strassburg’s Tristan, suggesting that these characters represent different literary versions of the same narrative figure.
Acquitain was renowned for his knowledge of astrology, which enabled him to discover the secret relationship between Tristan and Isolde. Loyal to King Mark, he repeatedly sought to expose the lovers’ affair, setting in motion some of the romance’s most dramatic episodes.
His wisdom, however, is portrayed as serving suspicion and intrigue rather than justice, making him one of the principal antagonists of the lovers.
In the Arthurian Tradition#
The role played by Acquitain is assumed by different characters in other versions of the Tristan legend. Béroul names the dwarf Frocin, while Gottfried von Strassburg gives the role to Melot of Aquitaine. Although these figures differ in name and background, they perform essentially the same narrative function by revealing—or attempting to reveal—the forbidden love between Tristan and Isolde.
Acquitain therefore illustrates how medieval authors frequently adapted familiar characters while preserving their role within the story.
