Introduction#
Agrestizia is the name given to the sister of Perceval in the Italian romance La Tavola Ritonda. Though unnamed in earlier Grail texts, she plays a crucial role in the Grail Quest, embodying purity, sacrifice, and spiritual devotion.

The Grail Quest and the Sacrifice#
Agrestizia accompanies Perceval, Bors, and Galahad during part of the Grail Quest. She is one of the few female figures to take an active and central role in the sacred journey.
One of her most significant acts is the creation of a new girdle for the Sword with the Strange Hangings, which she fashions from her own hair. This act of devotion replaces the earlier girdle and symbolizes purity and transformation within the Grail narrative.
The most defining episode of her story takes place at the castle of Aspetta Ventura. There, the lady of the castle, Verdoana, lies dying of leprosy. It is revealed that only the blood of a pure virgin can cure her. After Perceval, Galahad, and Bors fail to overcome the castle’s knights, Agrestizia willingly offers her blood.
The act proves fatal. She dies as a result of the bleeding, completing one of the most powerful acts of sacrifice in the Grail tradition. Perceval later buries her in the holy city of Sarras.

Though often unnamed in earlier sources, Perceval’s sister is one of the most important figures of the Grail Quest. The naming of Agrestizia in later tradition reflects an effort to give identity to a character whose role is already central.
Through her, the Grail narrative reaches one of its clearest expressions of spiritual devotion: a voluntary sacrifice that restores life to another.
