Introduction#

Alexander of Greece is the principal hero of the opening portion of Chrétien de Troyes’ romance Cligés. He was the eldest son of the Emperor of Greece and Constantinople. His story bridges the worlds of Arthurian Britain and the Byzantine Empire, making him one of the most distinctive heroes in medieval Arthurian romance.

Prince of Greece#

Alexander was the eldest son of the Emperor of Greece and Constantinople and his wife, Tantalis. Although destined to inherit the empire, he longed to prove himself through knightly deeds before assuming the responsibility of rulership.

Believing that no king could confer greater honour than Arthur, Alexander set out for Britain accompanied by loyal Greek companions.

Arthur’s Court#

Arthur welcomed Alexander and his companions with honour. When Count Angrs of Windsor rebelled against the king, Alexander and his followers requested knighthood so that they might fight in Arthur’s service.

Arthur granted their request, and the companions were knighted before crossing the Channel to join the campaign.

The Rebellion of Count Angrs#

Alexander quickly distinguished himself during the campaign against Count Angrs. Leading a daring assault into Windsor, he captured the rebel lord and brought the rebellion to an end.

In recognition of his courage and loyalty, Arthur entrusted Alexander with the governance of Wales until he should inherit his father’s empire.

Soredamors#

While serving at Arthur’s court, Alexander fell in love with Soredamors, one of Queen Guenevere’s ladies and the sister of Sir Gawain.

Though both hesitated to confess their feelings, Guenevere recognised their affection and gently encouraged their union. Alexander and Soredamors were soon married, and their son, Cligés, was born little more than a year later.

Return to Constantinople#

News eventually reached Alexander that his father had died. Because a false report claimed that Alexander himself had perished, his younger brother Alis had already been crowned emperor.

Alexander returned to Greece prepared to defend his rightful inheritance. Rather than allowing the dispute to descend into civil war, the brothers reached a compromise: Alis retained the imperial title, while Alexander assumed the practical responsibilities of government.

Final Years#

Alexander’s later years were spent governing the empire alongside his brother. Before his death from illness, he entrusted his young son Cligés with the charge of travelling to Arthur’s court and winning the same honour that had shaped his own life.

His death, followed soon after by that of Soredamors, marks the transition from Alexander’s story to that of Cligés, who becomes the hero of the remainder of the romance.

Legacy#

Alexander of Greece stands apart from many Arthurian heroes by combining the ideals of knighthood with those of imperial rule. His adventures unite the worlds of Arthurian Britain and Byzantium, while his marriage to Soredamors links the House of Arthur with the imperial family of Constantinople.

Through his son Cligés, Alexander’s legacy continues into the next generation of Arthurian romance.
