Arthurian Society: Heralds

Messengers of kings and keepers of arms, heralds maintained the dignity of tournaments and the order of war. In their knowledge of lineage and honor, they were historians of knighthood itself.

Heralds held an important and honorable position in both history and Arthurian romance. They were officers of arms, trained in the language of heraldry, and entrusted with proclaiming tournaments, declaring war, and bearing royal messages.

Their duties combined the ceremonial with the practical. Heralds ensured order at tournaments, announced combatants, and recognized knights by their arms and devices. In the field, they might carry messages between opposing forces or record feats of arms, protected by the custom of diplomatic immunity. In a society where honor and reputation defined a man’s worth, the herald’s role was indispensable.

Heralds in Arthurian Legend#

In the Arthurian world, where chivalry and renown were of supreme importance, heralds served as guardians of knightly identity and reputation. They ensured that each knight’s arms were correctly recognized in the lists and that his deeds were properly witnessed and reported. Without heralds, the intricate dance of honor that defined tournaments would have been impossible.

Heralds appear in Le Morte d’Arthur and the Vulgate Cycle in roles similar to pursuivants and messengers, but with greater prestige. In Le Morte d’Arthur (Book IX), heralds are shown declaring jousts and summoning knights by name. When King Arthur or another great lord called a tournament, heralds rode across the realm proclaiming the challenge. Their word carried royal authority, and knights answered their summons as a matter of duty and pride.

At great gatherings, such as the Tournament at Surluse, heralds announced the order of combat and recorded the valor of each participant, ensuring that knightly deeds would be remembered. Their impartiality was essential. A herald was expected to speak truthfully of a knight’s prowess, regardless of allegiance. In a realm where reputation was life itself, the herald’s word was law.

Heraldry Experts#

Heralds were also masters of heraldry — the symbolic language of coats of arms that distinguished noble houses and individual knights. In a world where armor concealed faces, their knowledge allowed them to identify combatants by colors, charges, and devices. Their testimony could decide disputes of honor, inheritance, or lineage, giving their role legal as well as ceremonial weight.

King of Arms#

Heralds often worked alongside pursuivants, their apprentices, who learned the arts of blazonry, protocol, and proclamation. A seasoned herald might rise to the rank of King of Arms, overseeing major ceremonies, tournaments, and even the granting of new arms in the name of sovereign authority.

Though they were not combatants, heralds were accorded great respect, even on the battlefield. Their persons were considered inviolate, and knights on both sides granted them safe passage. In a realm governed by chivalric law, heralds embodied the authority of communication, order, and restraint.

Symbolic Role#

Symbolically, heralds represent truth, memory, and order. They are the voices of chivalry, charged with preserving the integrity of knightly deeds and the lineage of honor. Their presence affirms that valor is seen and recorded, and that fame, rightly earned, will endure. In Arthurian literature, where glory and reputation shape identity itself, the herald stands as a witness to virtue — impartial, steadfast, and faithful to truth above all banners.
