The squire was the essential apprentice to knighthood — a young nobleman serving under a knight, learning the art of arms, horsemanship, and courtly courtesy. Historically, a squire’s duties were both practical and symbolic: he cared for his knight’s horse and armor, bore weapons into battle, and observed firsthand the ideals of service, discipline, and loyalty.

This period of training was not only preparation for combat but also a moral formation, teaching humility, patience, and devotion before assuming the full responsibilities of a knight. Each task, no matter how menial, contributed to shaping a future hero.

In Arthurian Legend#

In the Arthurian romances, squires appear as loyal companions and messengers. Sometimes they share in their masters’ adventures, while at other times they serve as silent witnesses to knightly deeds. Many are unnamed, underscoring their role as servants of a higher calling, yet their presence highlights the hierarchical order of chivalric life. Occasionally, a young squire is foreshadowed as a future hero, with the romances hinting at the transformation from service to glory — a passage from innocence to maturity.

In Malory, squires are frequently depicted preparing armor, bringing horses, and assisting in the field, reflecting the realism of knighthood’s daily demands. Even in these humble acts, the squire embodies diligence, obedience, and faithfulness. His apprenticeship mirrors the pilgrim’s journey — each task a step toward martial skill and spiritual refinement.

Symbolic Role#

The squire represents potential and promise, the soul in formation striving toward the chivalric ideal. His service is sacred preparation, teaching humility before honor. Within the Arthurian vision, the squire’s path reminds us that true knighthood is earned through service, and that greatness begins with learning to serve others before commanding them.
