Introduction#

The Crown of Arthur is a legendary object said to have been part of the royal regalia of Gwynedd, the principality of north Wales. Medieval chroniclers and later antiquarians linked it to the mythical King Arthur, claiming that it was either a relic of his reign or a symbolic inheritance of his authority.

Historical Content#

In 1283, following Edward I’s conquest of Gwynedd, the surviving regalia of the principality — including what was reputed to be the Crown of Arthur — were surrendered to the English king. According to records, Edward I subsequently placed these treasures at the shrine of St. Edward the Confessor in Westminster Abbey. This act may have been intended to reinforce his legitimacy as ruler of Wales by associating him with a lineage of legendary kings.

Legendary Significance#

The crown’s association with Arthur likely reflects a medieval effort to connect real political authority with legendary kingship. By claiming the regalia included Arthur’s crown, chroniclers and rulers could invoke the prestige and mystique of Britain’s mythical past.

After its transfer to Westminster, the crown disappears from historical record. Its actual existence is debated, and some historians suggest that references to it may have been symbolic rather than literal, emphasizing the enduring cultural power of Arthurian legend rather than documenting a surviving artifact.

Symbolism#

      • Legitimacy and sovereignty: The crown symbolizes rightful rule and continuity from the legendary Arthur to the rulers of later Britain.

      • Mystery and loss: Its disappearance enhances the aura of myth, leaving only stories and traditions to testify to its power.

      • Arthurian legacy: Linking a tangible object to Arthur underlines the medieval fascination with connecting history, legend, and divine sanction.
