Introduction#

Arthur’s Cup was a legendary vessel of remarkable craftsmanship and value, closely associated with the generosity and honor of King Arthur. Weighing approximately fifteen marks and fashioned entirely of gold, it was adorned with inset jewels whose worth exceeded that of the gold itself. The cup exemplified the medieval ideal of a royal gift: a tangible reward for valor, tempered by the subtlety of chivalric courtesy.

Reward for Valor#

Arthur declared that this cup would be granted to any man, even a common foot-soldier, who captured the rebellious Count Angrs’ castle. Should the victor be a knight, he could claim any additional reward of his choosing alongside the cup. This promise highlights the symbolic function of objects in Arthurian legend: they are not merely treasures, but instruments of moral testing and recognition of personal merit.

Sir Alexander and Gawain#

When the castle was ultimately captured, Sir Alexander accepted only the cup as his prize, demonstrating restraint and humility despite his military success. In a further gesture of friendship and courtesy, he persuaded Sir Gawain to accept the cup from him, strengthening bonds of camaraderie and highlighting the social and moral codes underpinning Arthurian knighthood. The cup thus became a symbol not only of martial achievement but also of the virtues of generosity, honor, and fellowship.

Symbolism#

      • Valor rewarded: The cup reflects the principle that courage and skill should be recognized, regardless of social rank.

      • Chivalric courtesy: Passing the cup to Gawain illustrates the intertwining of honor, friendship, and ethical conduct.

      • Material and moral value: The cup’s extraordinary craftsmanship and jewels underscore the union of worldly wealth and ethical virtue in Arthurian legend.
