Among the most dangerous and storied weapons in Arthurian romance is Balin’s Sword, first described in The Knight with the Two Swords, also known as The Tale of Balin. This enchanted weapon, presented at King Arthur’s court by a mysterious damsel, was destined for the knight deemed most valiant and pure of heart. Yet the sword’s gift carried both honor and tragedy, its dual nature marking it as a perilous instrument of destiny.
Origins and Description#
The damsel brought the sword with its two scabbards, one said to render the wielder invulnerable, and the other capable of delivering deadly wounds. She declared that only a knight whose deeds and lineage were free of villainy could draw it, a classic test of virtue and moral worth. Sir Balin, the Savage, was the one chosen, unaware that the sword’s dual nature would lead to heartbreak and death, including the fatal clash with his own brother, Balan.
Merlin later enhanced the sword with a new pommel and placed it within a block of floating red marble, leaving the scabbard at Balin’s burial site so that Galahad, the Grail Knight, might claim it in due time. When the sword floated to Camelot, its jeweled pommel bore a golden inscription:
“Never shall man take me hence, but only he by whose side I ought to hang, and he shall be the best knight of the world.”
This inscription underlines the sword’s dual role as both a literal weapon and a test of chivalric worth. Only the knight destined for greatness could wield it safely, while attempts by others risked grievous injury.
Trials and Tragedy#
The sword’s prophecy manifested in the deaths and near-deaths it caused. Balin unwittingly mortally wounded his brother Balan, fulfilling the tragic warning of the damsel. Lancelot and Gawain were warned of the sword’s peril; attempts to draw it without proper virtue resulted in injury or near disaster. Percivale came close but, nearly as pure as Galahad, suffered only a self-inflicted wound in penance for his momentary lapse. Ultimately, Galahad drew the sword, fulfilling the prophecy that it could be borne only by the best knight.

Balin’s Sword embodies the recurring Arthurian motif of perilous, fated weapons. It represents the intertwined nature of heroism and tragedy, where chivalric virtue must be tested, and destiny can be merciless. Like the Adventurous Sword, the Adventurous Shield, and the Siege Perilous, it is both a functional instrument of war and a symbol of divine judgment, moral responsibility, and the sometimes tragic consequences of human action. Its story underscores that greatness often comes hand in hand with suffering, and that the purest knights may be both the instruments and the victims of fate.
