Introduction#

The crown of King Ban of Benwick is a minor but symbolically significant object in Arthurian romance. Its story is closely tied to Ban’s son, Sir Lancelot, and the enchanted Forest Perilous (sometimes called Forest Perdue).

Origins and Description#

According to the Vulgate and Post-Vulgate cycles, when Gwenbaus chose to remain in Britain with his princess, King Ban entrusted his crown to them. The crown itself is not described as inherently magical, but it becomes bound to the enchantment of the forest grove where Gwenbaus and the princess reside. This association imbues it with a mystical aura: the forest will not release its enchantments until the crown is reunited with the rightful heir, a motif echoing the “token of legitimacy” trope common in medieval romance.

The crown is likely gold, in keeping with royal regalia of the period, but the texts focus more on its symbolic and narrative role than on its physical characteristics.

Magical Association#

The forest’s enchantment persists until Lancelot arrives, takes a seat in a designated chair, and wears the crown. In this way, the crown functions less as a magical object in itself than as a symbol of royal authority, inheritance, and the fulfillment of destiny. Its magical “effect” is narrative: it signals the completion of a challenge or trial and the restoration of rightful order.

Romances and Sources#

Lancelot en prose (Vulgate Lancelot, 1215-1230)
The crown is first mentioned as part of the tale of Gwenbaus and the enchanted forest.

Suite du Merlin (Post-Vulgate Lancelot, 1230-1240)
Emphasizes the crown’s role in breaking the enchantment and restoring order when Lancelot claims it.

La Tavola Ritonda (1325-1350)
Retells the episode, underlining the narrative symbolism of the crown in connection with the Forest Perilous.

Symbolism#

Ban’s Crown illustrates a recurring theme in Arthurian legend: objects are imbued with meaning through narrative and magical context. While the crown may not act as a “weapon” or provide direct powers, it signals legitimacy, the end of enchantments, and the continuation of heroic lineage. In this case, it is deeply connected to Lancelot’s heroic arc, marking his recognition and authority.
