Black Horse

The Black Horse is a proposed Arthurian symbol, advanced by S. G. Wildman, who suggested that it may represent a surviving emblem of the Arthurian Britons.

Introduction#

S. G. Wildman proposed a theory that the black horse functioned as a symbol of the Arthurian Britons. According to Wildman, this emblem survived not in medieval romance but in later English place-names and public houses, particularly inns bearing the name Black Horse.

Wildman suggested that the distribution of such inns might reflect areas where Arthurian influence or British resistance traditions once persisted, arguing that symbols associated with mounted warriors could outlast political control and survive as folk memory. In this view, the black horse became a cultural marker rather than a literary one.

A Theory#

No medieval Arthurian source explicitly associates Arthur or his warriors with a black horse as a heraldic or national emblem. The theory therefore rests on retrospective interpretation of place-names and popular symbolism rather than the textual evidence. Most scholars regard it as speculative and unproven, though it remains of interest in discussions of Arthurian folklore, continuity theory, and post-Roman British identity.

Notes#

The Black horse appears frequently in later English heraldry and inn signage, but its connection to Arthurian Britain is not supported by contemporary medieval texts.

Wildman’s idea belongs to a broader tradition of attempts to trace Arthur through landscape survivals and folk culture rather than literature.
