Introduction#

Cortaine is the sword of Tristan, later encountered by Charlemagne in the legendary romances. In the Prose Tristan, Charlemagne finds the weapon hanging around a statue of Tristan in front of Leverzep. Impressed by its craftmanship and power, he realizes the sword is too heavy for his own use and has it shortened, giving it the name Cortaine, literally “shortened” in reference to this modification.

Romantic Context#

Cortaine is the name given to Tristan’s sword after it passed into the hands of Charlemagne. According to the romances, the emperor discovered the weapon hanging from Tristan’s statue before the city of Leverzep. Finding it too heavy to wield, Charlemagne had the blade shortened — giving rise to its new name, Cortaine, meaning “the shortened one.”

In other traditions, the same sword is called Curetana (“The Cutter”), emphasizing its deadly sharpness rather than its altered length. Through these names, the weapon bridges Arthurian romance and Carolingian epic, linking Tristan, Charlemagne, and Ogier in a single legendary lineage.

Tristan’s Sword#

In the Prose Tristan, Tristan’s sword is left hanging from a statue erected in his honor outside Leverzep. The sword stands as a memorial to Tristan’s unmatched prowess, much like Excalibur and Durendal serve as monuments to Arthur and Roland.

The blade is not merely symbolic: it remains fully functional, heavy, and formidable — a weapon worthy of a hero whose feats rival those of the greatest knights of romance.

Charlemagne and the Shortening of the Sword#

When Charlemagne encounters the sword, he attempts to wield it but finds it too heavy for his own strength. Rather than abandon it, he has the blade shortened so that it may be carried and used in battle. From this act the sword receives its new name:

Cortaine – “the shortened sword”

This episode mirrors other legendary swords reshaped for later heroes, reinforcing the idea that great weapons outlive their original owners and pass through the hands of kings and champions.

Curetana – “The Cutter”#

In Carolingian tradition, the same sword appears under another name:

Curetana – from Latin curtare (“to cut, to cleave”)

Here, the emphasis is not on its length but on its lethal cutting power. Under this name, the sword is presented by Charlemagne to Ogier the Dane, one of his greatest paladins. Thus the blade passes through three heroic traditions.

Tristan – the supreme knight of love and battle
Charlemagne – emperor of Christendom
Ogier – champion of the Twelve Peers

Few legendary swords enjoy such a distinguished lineage.

A Sword Between Two Worlds#

Cortaine/Curetana occupies a rare place in medieval legend. It is both:

An Arthurian relic (Tristan’s weapon)
A Carolingian heirloom (Charlemagne and Ogier)

This crossover reflects how medieval romance freely blended heroic cycles, treating all great champions as part of a single mythic past.

Significance#

Cortaine represents the continuity of heroic power across generations. Like Excalibur, Durendal, and Joyeuse, it is more than steel — it is memory made metal. Shortened by Charlemagne, renamed as Curetana, and borne by Ogier, it remains forever marked as Tristan’s blade, a weapon whose legend outgrew its original master.
