Introduction#

Passing the Man with the Silver Leg, the Ferryman of Canguin led Gawain into Queen Igraine’s castle through a pair of wondrous doors — one of ivory and the other of ebony. Both were finely carved and sculpted, trimmed with gold and precious magic stones, and hung with golden hinges and bolts.

The Romance Background#

The episode appears in the Prose Lancelot (Vulgate Cycle), during Gawain’s perilous journey to the Castle of the Deadly Bed, a place associated with fatal enchantments, illusions, and supernatural tests.

Gawain is brought across the water by Canguin, the Ferryman of the Otherworld, after encountering the mysterious Man with the Silver Leg — a figure who himself belongs to the realm of marvels and portents. The castle is said to belong to Queen Igraine, Arthur’s mother, though in this context she appears less as a historical queen and more as a mythic sovereign of an enchanted domain.

Beneath the doors lay a pavement of polished black, white, red, blue, and violet stone, gleaming like glass. These doors opened directly into the chamber of the Wondrous Bed – a place of peril, enchantment, and prophetic trial. The magical bed had slain or trapped many knights before Gawain’s arrival.

The doors form a ceremonial threshold between the mortal world and a realm of dream, fate, and ordeal. To pass through them is not merely to enter a chamber, but to cross into a space where the laws of nature and reason no longer apply.

Mythic Meaning of Ivory and Ebony#

The pairing of ivory and ebony is not accidental. It echoes a long classical and medieval tradition concerning the Gates of Dreams. In Homer’s Odyssey and later in Virgil’s Aeneid, dreams pass through two gates:

The Gate of Horn – for true dreams
The Gate of Ivory – for false dreams

Medieval writers adapted this symbolism. Ivory and ebony became emblematic of:

Light and darkness
Truth and illusion
Life and death
Flesh and spirit
Memory and forgetting

Thus the Doors of Ivory and Ebony mark the boundary between waking reality and enchanted trial — a liminal passage where prophecy, danger, and destiny converge.

The Wondrous Bed#

Beyond the doors lies the chamber of the Wondrous Bed, one of the most dangerous enchanted objects in Arthurian romance. The bed is surrounded by invisible snares, magical weapons, and deadly illusions. Many knights who attempted its trial never returned.

The doors therefore serve as a final warning: once crossed, retreat is no longer possible.

Symbolism and Significance#

The Doors of Ivory and Ebony represent:

– The threshold between mortal and Otherworld
– The passage into dream, prophecy, and enchantment
– The testing of knightly courage and discernment
– The ancient myth of dream-gates adapted into Arthurian romance
– The boundary between illusion and truth

They are not merely architectural marvels, but ritual gates into a sacred ordeal.
