  • Introduction#

At his coronation as king of Outre-Gales, Erec was adorned with a robe and presented with a remarkable scepter, both gifts reflecting the ideals of medieval kingship and the artistry of Chrétien de Troyes’s Arthurian world. These items combine practical regalia with symbolic resonance: the robe celebrates knowledge and culture, while the scepter embodies power and dominion.

    Description#

    The Robe#

Erec’s coronation robe was extraordinary in both craftmanship and symbolism. Woven from richly colored watered fabric, it depicted the four Liberal Arts – Geometry, Arithmetic, Music, and Astronomy – personified as women, perhaps echoing the four fairies said to have created the robe.

The lining was made from the multicolored skins of exotic, spice-eating beasts called barbioletes, reflecting a fascination with distant lands and mythical creatures. The robe’s tassels were set with four precious stones: two chrysolites on one side and two amethysts on the other, highlighting both aesthetic beauty and symbolic value.

    The Scepter#

Erec’s coronation scepter was equally remarkable. Carved entirely from a single emerald, it was as thick as a man’s fist and adorned with intricate representations of all known creatures – men, beasts, birds, and fish. This richness of detail conveyed dominion over the natural and human worlds alike.

The scepter was placed in Erec’s hand by Arthur, reflecting the king’s generosity and perhaps marking both a gift and a sign of trust in Erec’s rule.

    Symbolism and Significance#

Together, the robe and scepter symbolize the ideal medieval ruler: wise, cultured, and just. The robe’s depiction of the Liberal Arts underscores the importance of knowledge, moral discernment, and spiritual understanding in kingship. The scepter, carved with the likeness of all creatures, represents dominion, responsibility, and vigilance.

These regalia also serve narrative purposes in Erec et Enide, visually reinforcing Erec’s transformation from a valiant knight into a fully realized king. They reflect Chrétien’s attention to symbolic detail, where objects are not mere decoration but narrative devices that communicate character, status, and virtue.

    Sources#

The descriptions of Erec’s coronation attire come from Erec et Enide by Chrétien de Troyes (c. 1170), preserved in multiple manuscripts.
