Franchegel
One of Alexander's Greek companions who was knighted by Arthur and joined the expedition into Windsor that ended Count Angrs' rebellion.
Introduction#
Franchegel was one of the noble companions who accompanied Alexander of Greece from Constantinople to the court of King Arthur in Cligés. Knighted by Arthur at the outset of Count Angrs’ rebellion, he joined Alexander during the final assault on Windsor and survived the campaign.

A Companion of Alexander#
Franchegel belonged to Alexander’s company of Greek noblemen, who travelled from Constantinople to Britain in search of honour and adventure. Arthur knighted the companions before leading them into the campaign against Count Angrs of Windsor.
The Capture of Windsor#
Franchegel appears to have been among the companions who accompanied Alexander into Windsor during the final assault on the rebel stronghold. Their success brought Count Angrs’ rebellion to an end and restored peace to Arthur’s kingdom. Unlike several of his fellow companions, Franchegel survived the fighting.
In the Arthurian Tradition#
Following the suppression of the rebellion, Chrétien records nothing further of Franchegel’s life. His role nevertheless illustrates the loyalty and fellowship shared among Alexander’s Greek companions, whose service strengthened Arthur during one of the principal conflicts of Cligés.
