It belongs to Helyes of Toulouse, a learned clerk in the service of Duke Galehaut, and is said to contain knowledge capable of producing miraculous or supernatural effects.
Though not a weapon or relic of power in the traditional sense, the book represents a different kind of authority – one rooted in wisdom, study, and interpretation.
The Book and Its Power#
The book is described as possessing the potential to reveal hidden truths and even to produce extraordinary manifestations. However, its power is not automatic.
Helyes himself is able, on at least one occasion, to use the book to conjure what appears to be a demonic or supernatural apparition. This vision serves to clarify a prophecy concerning the fate and lifespan of Galehaut.
