Introduction#

John was the faithful servant of Cligés in Chrétien de Troyes’ Cligés. A highly skilled craftsman, he designed the ingenious tomb that preserved Fenice after she feigned her own death and later sheltered the lovers in his own tower. Though described a serf, John proves himself one of the romance’s most resourceful and steadfast characters.

A Master Craftsman#

John possessed remarkable skill as a builder and engineer. At Cligés’ request, he constructed a specially designed tomb that allowed Fenice to survive her apparent burial until Cligés could secretly rescue her.

Later, John provided the lovers with refuge in a secluded tower, where they lived together for a time beyond the reach of Emperor Alis.

Loyalty Above Fear#

John agreed to aid his master after Cligés promised to grant freedom to him, his wife, and their children. Even after Bertrand discovered the lovers’ hiding place, John remained steadfast.

When brought before Emperor Alis, he endured threats of torture and death rather than reveal where Cligés and Fenice had fled. His courage and eloquence won admiration, demonstrating a loyalty that rivalled that of Arthur’s greatest knights.

The New Emperor#

After Alis died, John joined the delegation that travelled from Constantinople to Britain to proclaim Cligés the new Emperor of Greece and Constantinople.

Although Chrétien does not describe John’s later life, it is natural to suppose that Cligés honoured the promise he had made to his faithful servant by granting freedom to John and his family.

Literary Significance#

John is one of the most remarkable non-noble characters in Arthurian romance. Although born a serf, he distinguishes himself through intelligence, craftsmanship, courage, and unwavering loyalty rather than noble birth or knightly prowess.

His character illustrates one of the recurring themes of Cligés: that honour and virtue are measured by deeds as much as by rank. By placing such an important role in the hands of a commoner, Chrétien broadens the social world of Arthurian romance beyond kings and knights.
