Introduction#

Nebunal of Mycenae was one of the noble companions who accompanied Alexander of Greece from Constantinople to the court of King Arthur in Chretien de Troyes’ Cligés.

A Companion of Alexander#

Nebunal belonged to Alexander’s company of Greek noblemen, who journeyed from Constantinople to Britain in search of honour and adventure.

Knighted by Arthur at the outbreak of Count Angrs’ rebellion, Nebunal distinguished himself not through feats of arms alone, but through sound judgement and military counsel during the campaign. His timely advice helped secure Arthur’s victory over the rebels.

Wisdom in the Siege of Windsor#

During the final assault on Windsor, Alexander and a small band of companions succeeded in entering the town and pursued Count Angrs into the keep.

Recognising the danger that the townspeople might come to the rebel’s aid, Nebunal advised Alexander to block the outer approaches before reinforcements could arrive. His advice was immediately followed and proved decisive in securing the victory.

Rather than being remembered for extraordinary prowess in battle, Nebunal is distinguished in the romance for his wisdom, prudence, and sound military judgement.

Return to Greece#

Nebunal survived the rebellion and returned to Greece with Alexander after peace had been restored in Britain. The romance records no further adventures, but his actions at Windsor ensured his place among Alexander’s most trusted companions.
