Introduction#
Neriolis was one of the noble companions who accompanied Alexander of Greece from Constantinople to the court of King Arthur in Cligés.

A Companion of Alexander#
Neriolis belonged to Alexander’s company of Greek noblemen, who journeyed from Constantinople to Britain in search of honour and adventure. Arthur knighted the companions before leading them into the campaign against Count Angrs of Windsor.
The Night Sortie#
As the rebellion neared its end, Count Angrs launched a daring night sortie against Arthur’s army. Amid the confusion of the darkness and fierce fighting, Neriolis was slain.
His death illustrates the dangers faced even by Arthur’s most loyal allies and reminds us that victory in the rebellion came at a heavy cost.
Legacy#
Although his appearance in Cligés is brief, Neriolis represents one of the companions who gave his life in Arthur’s service. His sacrifice forms part of the broader story of Alexander’s Greek companions, several of whom fell while helping Arthur suppress the rebellion.
