The wise companion and guide of Sir Guyon in Spenser's The Faerie Queene.

Throughout Sir Guyon’s quest, the Palmer provides counsel, guidance, and spiritual wisdom, helping the Knight of Temperance overcome the many dangers and temptations that lead to the Bower of Bliss.

The Palmer#
A palmer was originally a pilgrim who had visited the Holy Land and returned carrying a palm branch as a sign of the journey. By Spenser’s time, the word already carried strong associations with spiritual wisdom and experience.
Unlike Redcrosse, Guyon, or Arthur, Palmer isn’t really a personal name. It’s his role.
That was common in allegory. Spenser gives many important figures descriptive names or designations rather than individual names.
Companion to Guyon#
Although not a knight himself, he accompanies Guyon throughout his quest to destroy the Bower of Bliss, offering wisdom, restraint, and sound judgement whenever his companion faces danger or temptation. His guidance proves indispensable to Guyon’s success.
Throughout their journey across Fairy Land, the Palmer accompanies Guyon through a series of trials that test the knight’s virtue of Temperance. While Guyon provides courage and martial strength, the Palmer contributes experience, wisdom, and moral guidance.
Together, they form a partnership in which action is balanced by judgement.
The Quest for the Bower of Bliss#
The Palmer remains at Guyon’s side until they reach the Bower of Bliss, where every sight and sensation is designed to overwhelm reason with pleasure.
While Guyon captures the sorceress Acrasia, the Palmer assists in destroying the enchanted garden, helping to end its power over those who had fallen victim to its temptations.
Allegorical Significance#
Like many figures in The Faerie Queene, the Palmer is an allegorical character. He represents wisdom, reason, and spiritual guidance, complementing Guyon’s embodiment of Temperance.
His presence suggests that virtue requires not only courage but also wise counsel and self-knowledge.
In the Arthurian Tradition#
Although the Palmer has no direct counterpart in the medieval Arthurian romances, he belongs to Spenser’s Arthurian world as one of the principal companions of Sir Guyon. His role reflects the Renaissance ideal that true chivalry depends as much upon wisdom and discipline as upon martial prowess.
