Perceval’s Sword

Introduction#
Perceval’s sword is distinguished by the image of a red cross and cruciform sign set within its pommel. Though not among the great named swords of Arthurian tradition, it serves as an important symbol of Perceval’s spiritual identity and devotion.
The Sword of the Grail Knight#
The sword is described as possessing notable strength, capable of cutting through chains without damage to its blade.
Its most important feature, however, is not martial but symbolic. The cross set into the pommel functions as a continual reminder of God and of the spiritual dimension of Perceval’s quest. Unlike swords associated with sovereignty or destruction, Perceval’s weapon reflects inward discipline and faith.
Exchange During the Grail Quest#
During the Grail Quest, Perceval eventually relinquishes his own sword after Galahad acquires the Sword of David, also known as the Sword with the Strange Hangings.
At this point, Perceval receives Galahad’s former weapon, traditionally identified with the sword once drawn from the floating stone at Camelot.
Perceval leaves his earlier sword behind at the hermitage in the forest of Carteloise.
Symbolism and Significance#
Perceval’s sword differs from many famous Arthurian weapons in that its importance lies less in power than in spiritual association.The red cross within the pommel reflects the broader movement of the Grail tradition away from the heroic conquest and toward spiritual purpose.
