Perilous Palace
A haunted castle of punishment and enchantment associated with the Grail tradition.
Introduction#
The Perilous Palace is an enchanted and accursed stronghold appearing in the Post-Vulgate tradition. Located within the Forest of Darnantes, it is connected with sin, supernatural punishment, and eventual redemption through the coming of Galahad.
In other traditions, the name is associated with the castle of King Pellehan, more commonly known as the Palace of Adventures.
Simeon’s Punishment#
According to the Post-Vulgate romances, the palace was the place of torment for Simeon, a sinful follower of Joseph of Arimathea.
Because of his wrongdoing, Simeon was condemned to remain within the castle in perpetual burning agony until the arrival of the destined Grail knight.
Only Galahad, through his spiritual purity and divine favor, was able to end the punishment and release Simeon from his suffering.
The Forest of Darnantes#
The palace stands within the Forest of Darnantes, itself a place associated with peril, enchantment, and wandering.
Like many Grail locations, the Perilous Palace exists at the boundary between earthly and spiritual reality, where sin and redemption take visible form.
Association with Pellehan#
In some traditions, the name “Perilous Palace” is also applied to the castle of King Pellehan, the Grail King.
This stronghold is more frequently known as the Palace of Adventures, a place closely tied to Grail quests and knightly trials.
The differing identifications suggest that “Perilous Palace,” like many similiar Arthurian names, may function more as a descriptive title than as the name of a single fixed location.
Symbolism and Significance#
The Perilous Palace reflects a recurring Grail theme: that spiritual corruption leaves visible wounds upon both people and places.
Its dangers are not merely physical. The palace is a site of judgment, suffering, and eventual release through grace. The liberation of Simeon by Galahad reinforces the idea that only the purest Grail knight can restore what has been spiritually broken.
