Introduction#

Perilous valleys in Arthurian literature are isolated and dangerous regions associated with imprisonment, giants, hostile knights, and deadly adventures. Like perilous forests and fords, these valleys function as enclosed trial-spaces where knights face dangers cut off from the ordinary world.

Alternative Names | Val Perilleus

The Valley of the Red Knight#

A fortified land ruled by the Red Knight, an enemy of Arthur, situated beside the Sea of Norway and surrounded by high mountains. The valley could only be entered through a narrow passage, making it both a fortress and a prison.

The Red Knight of the Perilous Valley held many of Arthur’s knights captive there until Gawain and Meriadeuc entered the valley and defeated him, freeing the prisoners.

The enclosed geography of the valley emphasizes its role as an isolated realm of danger and captivity.

The Valley of Sidravalle#

Another Perilous Valley appears in the Grail tradition as a deadly vale from which no knight was said to return alive.

During the Grail Quest, Lancelot and Tristan entered the valley and slew two savage giants at the castle of Sidravalle.

Some traditions associate this region with one of Merlin’s enchanted stones, though the identification is uncertain. Unlike the northern stronghold of the Red Knight, this valley belongs more clearly to the supernatural and perilous landscape of the Grail romances.

Symbolism and Significance#

Perilous valleys in Arthurian romance often function as enclosed worlds separated from ordinary society by mountains, narrow passes, or enchantment.

They commonly symbolize isolation, imprisonment, confrontation with hidden dangers, and descent into peril before liberation or victory. Unlike open battlefields, these valleys trap knights within spaces governed by hostile powers or supernatural threats.
