Pridwen is one of the oldest names connected with King Arthur. In Welsh tradition, it is the name of Arthur’s ship, used during his voyage to Annwn, the Welsh Otherworld. Geoffrey of Monmouth later applied the name to Arthur’s shield instead. The differing traditions reflect the fluid and evolving nature of early Arthurian legend.
In Welsh tradition, Pridwen is Arthur’s vessel during his expedition to Annwn, the mysterious Otherworld described in the poem Preiddeu Annwfn (“The Spoils of Annwn”).
Arthur sails aboard Pridwen with his warriors on a perilous supernatural journey connected with treasure, mystery, and the realm beyond the mortal world.
The ship is one of the earliest named objects associated with Arthur in surviving literature.
Geoffrey of Monmouth transformed Pridwen into Arthur’s shield in the Historia Regum Britanniae.
According to Geoffrey, the shield bore an image of the Virgin Mary upon its inner side, and Arthur carried it during the Battle of Bath against the Saxons.
This association links Arthur’s warfare with Christian symbolism and divine protection.
The shift from ship to shield demonstrates how Arthurian material evolved between Welsh tradition and later Latin chronicles. Some names and objects changed function over time as authors adapted older traditions into new literary and political contexts.
Whether Geoffrey intentionally reassigned the name or inherited an altered tradition remains uncertain.
