Introduction#

Segurant the Brown, also known as the Knight of the Dragon, was the greatest champion of Uther Pendragon’s Old Table and one of the most celebrated heroes of the pre-Arthurian generation. His adventures are recorded in the Palamedes, Prose Tristan, and La Tavola Ritonda, where he appears as a renowned warrior, dragon-hunter, and eventually king of Abiron.

Epithets | Knight of the Dragon
Affiliations | Old Table
Alternative Names | Seguarant, Sigurans

Knight of the Dragon#

Segurant earned his most famous epithet through his relentless pursuit of a dragon. The creature led him across many lands, and the quest became the defining adventure of his career.

His pursuit of the dragon established his reputation as one of the greatest knights of his age and made him a legendary figure even among the heroes of Arthurian romance.

A Champion of the Old Table#

Among the knights of Uther Pendragon’s Old Table, Segurant was considered the foremost warrior. He belonged to the generation of heroes who flourished before the rise of King Arthur and the Round Table.

His fame endured long after Uther’s reign, and later knights continued to speak of his exploits.

King of Abiron#

After many adventures, Segurant became king of the realm of Abiron.

Though little survives concerning the kingdom itself, its association with Segurant secured its place in Arthurian tradition.

Later Adventures#

Among Segurant’s other exploits were the destruction of the Tower of the Copper Marvel and victory at a tournament held in Winchester.

The Lady of the Lake is said to have taken steps to prevent a meeting between Segurant and Lancelot, perhaps fearing the consequences of a contest between two of the greatest knights in Arthurian legend.

Segurant and the Grail Quest#

Some traditions place Segurant among the knights active during the Quest for the Holy Grail. Despite being one hundred and sixty years old, he remained a formidable warrior.

During this period, he defeated Lancelot in combat and later jousted Tristan to a draw. He eventually died from a wound inflicted by Tristan.

Legacy#

Although long overshadowed by knights such as Lancelot, Tristan, and Gawain, Segurant was one of the most important heroes of the Old Table tradition. Modern scholarship has highlighted his significance through the rediscovery and study of romances devoted to his adventures.

His stories preserve a vision of Arthurian heroism rooted in the generation before Arthur’s reign and help bridge the worlds of Uther Pendragon and the Round Table.
