Sleeping Potion
An enchanted sleeping potion draught used by Morgan le Fay to place Sir Alisander into a magical slumber.
Introduction#
Sleeping potions appear occasionally in Arthurian romance as instruments of enchantment, deception, and magical transportation. Unlike healing balms or love potions, their purpose is to render the victim helpless while events unfold beyond his knowledge or control.
Morgan le Fay’s Potion#
Morgan le Fay gave Sir Alisander a drink that caused him to fall into a deep sleep lasting three days and three nights.
While he remained unconscious, Morgan transported him to the castle of La Beale Regard. The potion allowed the enchantress to move him without resistance and demonstrates her mastery of magical arts.
Sleep and Enchantment#
Magical sleep is a recurring motif in medieval romance and folklore.
Characters may be enchanted into sleep, hidden away from the world, transported to distant locations, or preserved until a destined time.
In Arthurian literature, such enchantments are most often associated with powerful figures such as Morgan le Fay and the Lady of the Lake. Like many of Morgan’s enchantments, it blurs the boundary between the ordinary world and the realm of magic.
