Introduction#
The Three Spindles of Solomon were sacred objects in the Grail tradition, fashioned from wood descended from the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. Their white, green, and red colors symbolized innocence, life, and bloodshed, linking the history of humanity to the later mysteries of the Holy Grail.
The Tree of Knowledge#
According to the Grail romances, Eve carried away a branch from the Tree of Knowledge when Adam and Eve were expelled from Paradise. She planted it in the world beyond Eden, where it continued to grow through the generations.
The wood of the tree changed color as humanity’s story unfolded. It remained white while Eve retained her innocence, turned green after Adam and Eve began the human race, and became red after Cain slew Abel beneath its branches.
Solomon’s Spindles#
During the reign of Solomon, wood from the sacred tree was cut to make three spindles. The tree bled when struck by the axe, revealing its holy nature.
Using the naturally colored wood, a craftsman fashioned:
– a white spindle
– a green spindle
– a red spindle
The spindles later became associated with Solomon’s Ship and the sacred history leading to the Grail.
Symbolism and Significance#
The three colors represent:
