The Seats of the Round Table
The seats of the Round Table were more than places to sit. In Arthurian tradition, each seat represented a knight's place within the fellowship.
Introduction#
The Round Table was composed of a fixed number of seats reserved for Arthur’s companions. Together, these seats symbolized the equality and unity of the fellowship, with no knight occupying a position of greater honor than another.
The Seats#
The seats of the Round Table represent fellowship, equality, destiny, and knightly honor.
Together they formed the visible structure of Arthur’s court, transforming a collection of individual warriors into one of the most celebrated fellowships of medieval literature.
In several romances, the seats possessed a magical or prophetic quality, revealing the names of their rightful occupants.
The Names of the Knights#
Some traditions describe the seats as bearing the names of their proper occupants in letters of gold.
These names could appear supernaturally when the destined knight approached, suggesting that membership in the Round Table was not merely a matter of royal appointment but also of fate and worthiness.
When a knight died, however, his place was normally filled through human means. Arthur and his counselors selected a successor from among worthy candidates, preserving the fellowship’s fixed number.
Fellowship and Rivalry#
Ideally, companions of the Round Table were not supposed to fight one another except in tournaments or friendly contests.
In practice, Arthurian romance contains numerous examples of Round Table knights wounding or killing fellow companions. Such tragedies often occurred when knights traveled incognito, concealed their heraldry, or failed to recognize one another before combat.
The resulting revelations frequently became some of the most dramatic moments in Arthurian literature.
The Queen’s Knights#
Some romances mention an auxiliary company known as the Queen’s Knights.
Although allied to Arthur’s court, they seem to have formed a separate body from the companions of the Round Table. The existence of both groups occasionally gave rise to rivalry and competition.
Pentecost and the Renewal of Vows#
The Knights of the Round Table traditionally renewed their vows at Pentecost.
This annual ceremony reaffirmed their commitment to honor, justice, loyalty, and the protection of the weak.
Pentecost also became one of the principal occasions for Arthur’s court to receive visitors, hear petitions, and begin new adventures.
The Siege Perilous#
Among the seats of the Round Table, one stood apart from all the others: the Siege Perilous.
Reserved for the knight destined to achieve the Holy Grail, it remained empty until the coming of Galahad. Unlike the ordinary seats of the fellowship, it carried a deadly supernatural sanction against any unworthy occupant.
