Introduction#

The Three Silver Shields were a set of magical shields sent to Lancelot by the French Damsel of the Lake during his assault on Dolorous Guard.

The Shields#

The three shields were distinguished by their markings: one red band, two red bands, and three red bands.

Each shield granted a greater increase in strength than the last, helping Lancelot overcome the many dangers and enchantments protecting the fortress.

According to the romance, the first renewed Lancelot’s strength, the second doubled it, and the third trebled it.

The Conquest of Dolorous Guard#

The shields were sent to Lancelot during his famous conquest of Dolorous Guard, the enchanted stronghold that later became known as Joyous Gard.

Protected by powerful enchantments and dangerous trials, the castle could only be won by an exceptional knight. The Three Silver Shields formed part of the supernatural assistance provided to Lancelot during this adventure.

Unlike many enchanted Arthurian objects, they were not permanent possessions but gifts intended for a specific quest. Their association with the conquest of Dolorous Guard links them to one of Lancelot’s greatest achievements.

The French Damsel of the Lake#

The shields were sent by the French Damsel of the Lake, one of several mysterious lake maidens who appear throughout Arthurian romance.

Like the Lady of the Lake, she acts as a benefactor to worthy knights, providing magical aid at crucial moments.
