Tor the Strong
One of Alexander's Greek companions who was knighted by Arthur and fought in the campaign against Count Angrs of Windsor.
Introduction#
Tor the Strong was one of the noble companions who accompanied Alexander of Greece from Constantinople to the court of King Arthur in Cligés. Knighted by Arthur at the beginning of Count Angrs’ rebellion, he joined the king’s forces in the campaign against the rebel lord of Windsor.

A Companion of Alexander#
Tor the Strong belonged to Alexander’s company of Greek noblemen, who travelled from Constantinople to Britain in search of honour and adventure. Arthur knighted the companions before leading them into the war against Count Angrs.
In Arthur’s Service#
Following his knighthood, Tor fought alongside Arthur’s army during the rebellion of Count Angrs of Windsor. He survived the campaign and later returned to Greece with Alexander, though Cligés records no further details of his life.
Distinguishing the Character#
Tor the Strong should not be confused with Tor, son of Aries (Tor le Fils d’Aries), the better-known Knight of the Round Table who appears in the French prose cycles and Le Morte Darthur. The two are separate characters belonging to different Arthurian traditions.
