Trebuchet
A master smith of the Grail tradition renowned for forging only three swords during his lifetime.
Introduction#
Trebuchet is a legendary smith who appears in Chrétien de Troyes’s Perceval. Although little is known about his life, he is remembered as the maker of one of the most remarkable swords in Arthurian literature.

The Master Smith#
The romances present Trebuchet as a craftsman of extraordinary skill.
Among his creations was the sword later given by the Fisher King to Perceval. The weapon was renowned for its strength, beauty, and unusual destiny. Trebuchet also engraved King Frimutel’s sword and crafted a fine helmet for Duke Orguelleus of Lalander.
His work was evidently prized among the noble families connected with the Grail.
The Three Swords#
Trebuchet is said to have forged only three swords in his life.
The reason for this limitation is never fully explained. It may reflect the exceptional care and skill devoted to each weapon, or perhaps a prophetic restriction placed upon the smith. Whatever the reason, the rarity of his swords contributed greatly to their fame.
The Grail Family#
Trebuchet appears to have had connections with the family of the Fisher King.
The Fisher King’s niece acquired one of his swords and sent it to her uncle with instructions that it be bestowed upon a worthy champion. The circumstances by which she obtained the weapon are never explained, though the story suggests some prior acquaintance between her and the smith.
Trebuchet also crafted two knives for the Grail family, further linking him to the sacred lineage.
Cotoatre#
Trebuchet lived near Cotoatre, a place often identified with the region of the Firth of Forth in Scotland.
It was there that Perceval eventually found the smith’s forge and brought him the broken pieces of his sword.
Prophecy and Death#
Trebuchet possessed foreknowledge concerning the fate of the sword he had forged.
He knew that it would one day break during a perilous moment and that only he would be able to repair it. The romances further state that Trebuchet was destined to die after restoring the weapon.
When Perceval finally arrived at his forge with the broken sword, the smith reluctantly fulfilled his fate and repaired the blade.
