Arthur’s Shield#
In Culhwch and Olwen, Arthur is described as carrying the shield Wynebgwrthucher.
Like many heroic weapons in Celtic and medieval literature, the shield bears a personal name, emphasizing its importance and legendary status. The practice reflects a tradition in which exceptional arms were regarded as almost possessing identities of their own.
Unfortunately, the tale provides little additional description of the shield’s appearance or powers.

The meaning of Wynebgwrthucher remains uncertain.

In Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, Pridwen is the name of Arthur’s shield, whereas in Welsh tradition Prydwen is usually his ship. This difference illustrates how Arthurian traditions evolved and changed as stories passed between Welsh, Latin, French, and English authors.
Significance#
Although little is known about Wynebgwrthucher itself, its inclusion among Arthur’s named possessions demonstrates the importance attached to the king’s arms in early Welsh tradition.
The shield stands as one of the oldest surviving examples of Arthur’s legendary equipment and forms part of the rich heroic world preserved in Culhwch and Olwen.
