Gronw Bebyr

Gronw Pebyr

The hunter whom Blodeuwedd took as her lover.

Together the lovers plotted the death of Blodeuwedd's husband Lleu Llaw Gyffes. At Gronw Bebyr's suggestion, Blodeuwedd might be killed, and at length managed to persuade him to reveal that he could be killed only by a spear that had been worked for a year and a a day at mass time on Sundays, and then only if he were standing with one foot in a bathtub and the other on the back of a billygoat.

At length Blodeuwedd persuaded Lleu Llaw Gyffes to demonstrate the position to her. Gronw Bebyr, furnished with the necessary spear, hid in some nearby bushes and, when Lleu Llaw Gyffes adopted the ridiculous position, stood and hurled the spear at him but managed only to inflict a wound. Lleu Llaw Gyffes changed into an eagle and flew away to die from his wound, but was sought out and healed by Gwydion fab Dôn.

Lleu Llaw Gyffes returned to kill Gronw Bebyr, while Gwydion fab Dôn dealt with the infidelity of Blodeuwedd by changing her into an owl.
