Episford
Ailesford, Aylesford, Epsford
The Saxon name for the location known by the Britons as Rhyd yr afael, a ford where King Vortigern’s son, Vortimer, defeated Hengist’s Saxon armies in his second such battle.
Hengist’s brother, Horsa, died in the battle, as did Vortigern’s son Catigern.
This battle is analogous to the one that the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle claims was fought at Ægelsthrep in 455.
