An English poet whose opera, King Arthur (1691), borrows little from Arthurian legend, having Arthur in love with a blind girl, Emmeline, who is also loved by Arthur's enemy, the Saxon, Oswald.

The music for the opera was by Henry Purcell (died 1695).
