Mercia

An Anglo-Saxon kingdom that emerged in the sixth century and that, by the late eighth century, dominated all England south of the River Humber.

From c. 825 Mercia came under the power of Wessex. Mercia eventually came to denote an area bounded by the Welsh border, the River Humber, East Anglia and the River Thames.
