Newcastle

In the second century AD, Emperor Hadrian founded the Roman settlement in what is now Newcastle, then known as Pons Aelius. There were a Roman fort and over the River Tyne there was a bridge. In some parts of the city fragments of Hadrian's Wall are still visible.

In Arthurian literature the lord of Newcastle was Sorneham of Newcastle.
