      The word signifies borders or border territory. We meet such characters as the Duke of the South Marches, indicating that the Marches could be political entites in themselves.

      Tentatively, the South Marches might parallel the eastern border of Devon, the Straight Marches follow the eastern border of Wales, and the North Marches extend along the southern border of Scotland.
