Romarec

Rumarek, Rumaret, Rumareth, Rummaret

The King of Finland or Wendland in the time of Arthur.

He paid homage to Arthur in Iceland to avoid being conquered. His domain is referred to as Weneland (Wendland) by Wace, and as Winetland and Winet by Layamon. The country of the Wends, Finland and Gwynedd, have all been suggested as the land intended.

He sent his son to Arthur’s court as a kind of hostage. His son later helped put a stop to a brawl in Arthur’s hall. Romarec assisted Arthur in the conquest of France.

The name Weneland may suggest a connection with Vinland, the Norse name for that part of North America which, as we now suspect, was discovered in the Middle Ages.
