Jesus is the central figure of Christianity, seen as the son of God.
Accounts states that Jesus was born to Joseph and Mary in Bethlehem. It was a virgin birth – Jesus was miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit. Mary learns that she will give birth to a boy, called Jesus, by the angel Gabriel.
He was baptized by John the Baptist in the River Jordan, he lived in Galilee and Judea.
Jesus was arrested in Gethsemane, after the Last Supper and taken to trial where Pontius Pilate, a Roman prefect, gives the order to crucify Jesus. He scourges Jesus before soldiers place a Crown of Thorns on Jesus’ head and ridicules him as the King of Jews. They taunt and beat him before he is taken to Calvary, also called Golgotha, for crucifixion.
He carries his cross along the Via Dolorosa and he is assisted by Simon of Cyrene. He is offered a concoction as a painkiller at Calvary, but he refuses it. Along the way a woman, Veronica, gives him a veil to wipe his forehead with. He accepted the offering, held it to his face, and then gave it back to her – his face was impressed upon it. This piece of cloth became known as the Veil of Veronica.
The soldiers then crucify Jesus between two convicted thieves. He died after about six hours and to make sure of this a Roman centurion named Longinus pierced Jesus in the side with his spear, where a mix of blood and water flowed from the wound. Jesus was taken down by Joseph of Arimathea and buried in a rock-hewn tomb.
