Erec’s Robe

Worn by Erec on his coronation as king of Outre-Gales, this extraordinarily rich robe depicted the four Liberal Arts – Geometry, Arithmetic, Music, and Astronomy – in feminine personifications, perhaps connected with the four fairies who had made the robe of watered fabric.

It was lined with the multicolored skins of spice-eating and probably fabulous Indian beasts called barbioletes. It had four stones in the tassels: two chrysolites on one side and two amethysts on the other.
