The Woodland Elves
The Ellylon (singular: Ellyl) are ethereal beings from Welsh mythology, known for their lightness, subtlety, and connection to the wild beauty of nature. As some of the gentlest and most enchanting members of the fairy world, the Ellyllon live close to the earth but are rarely seen by human eyes.
Appearance and Traits
Ellyllon are typically described as small, delicate, and radiant – more spirit-like than solid. Their features are fair and graceful, and they often wear garments spun from nature: gossamer threads, flower petals, or shimmering mist. Their physical form are so light and airy that they can drift on the wind like pollen.
They are said to glow faintly in moonlight, and their laughter is like the tinkling of tiny bells or the rustle of wind through leaves.
Habitat
Ellyllon dwells in forests, glades, and hollow hills – especially in ancient oak groves or near clear springs. In Welsh legend, they are particularly connected to Ceredigion and other lush rural regions.
They are most often active at twilight or under the full moon, and they vanish before the sun touches the land. To spot them is to witness a rare and magical moment.
Food and Customs
The Ellyllon are said to feast on toadstools and fungi, particularly the red-capped mushrooms that grow in shady woodland circles. They drink dewdrops and nectar, gathered at dawn, and are nourished by the scent of wild herbs.
In other tales, they were also fond of human food left out as offerings, especially sweet cream and bread. Leaving a small dish out overnight might win their favor – or at least ensure they don’t play tricks on your household.
Magic and Abilities
Though shy and elusive, Ellyllon possess powerful fairy magic. They can influence dreams, guide or mislead travelers, heal with herbs and song, and appear or vanish at will.
They’re also known to gift blessings to kind-hearted people, especially those who respect nature and speak well of the fair folk. But beware – disrespect or destruction of their woods might bring mischief or mild curses.
Connection to Other Elves
The Ellyllon are somtimes compared to:
- The Light-Elves or Norse myth
- The Pixies of English folklore
- The Daoine Sidhe of Ireland
But they remain uniquely Welsh in temperament – gentle, playful, and deeply tied to the misty landscapes of Cymru.
