William of Salebrant

William Celebronche

A companion of BleoberisElin of Graie, and the lord of Saie (Knight of Saie) in Renaut de Bâgé’s Le Bel Inconnu.

When Bleoberis was defeated in combat by Guinglain, William, Elin, and the lord tried to avenge Bleoberis’s disgrace. Guinglain defeated them all at Valcolor, killing William and wounding the other two.

In Thomas Chestre’s Lybeaus Desconus, William has a stronger role as the guardian of the Perilous Passage. Guinglain defeats him, but does not kill him, instead sending him to Arthur’s court.
