In Layamon’s Brut, this may be the name of the elfin smith who fashioned Arthur’s hauberk, Wygar, or signify ‘wizard’.
If a personal name is intended, however, we may be dealing here with a form of Widia, the son of a legendary smith, Wayland. Wayland, together with his father Wade and his son Widia, was brought to Britain by Anglo-Saxons.
Wayland may be mentioned in Geoffrey’s Vita Merlini.
