Introduction#

Medieval Arthurian romances delight in moments where chivalric ideals collide with the unexepected. Knights are tested not only by strength and courage, but by wit, adaptability, and the ability to act decisively when courtly order breaks down. Few episodes illustrate this better than the strange and memorable scene in which Gawaine (Gawain of Orkney), suddenly deprived of his arms, turns a chessboard into a shield and its ivory pieces into weapons.

In the Moment of Need#

When Gawaine finds himself trapped in a tower room, surrounded by a hostile mob, he is at a severe disadvantage. As a guest, he has been disarmed according to the laws of hospitality, and when violence suddenly threatens, he has neither his own nor his customary shield at hand. The King of Escavalon’s sister does what she can to equip him in haste, but no shield can be found.

In this moment of improvisation, Gawaine seizes upon what is available: a chessboard. Sweeping its pieces onto the floor, he declares that the board will serve him as well as any shield could. The scene is both heroic and faintly comic. Chess, the emblem of courtly refinement, strategy, and noble leisure, is abruptly transformed into an instrument of war.

The chessmen themselves are no ordinary pieces. They are described as ivory and ten times the size of normal chessmen—large enough to become weapons in their own right. The lady hurls them down upon the attackers below, turning symbols of intellect and order into blunt projectiles. The size of the pieces implies that the chessboard, too, must have been massive, and Gawaine’s ability to lift and wield it like a shield subtly emphasizes his physical strength.

At the same time, the episode has the flavor of tall-tale humor. The exaggerated scale of the chess set, the image of a knight defending himself with a game board, and the incongruous violence of ivory chessmen raining down on a mob all suggest that the author is enjoying the sheer strangeness of the situation. It is a moment where Gawaine’s ingenuity and prowess are celebrated, but with a wink rather than solemn reverence.

The episode of Gawaine using a chessboard as a shield comes from the early 13th-century Arthurian romance Perlesvaus, also known as The High Book of the Grail. This Old French text belongs to the non-Vulgate Grail tradition, a strand of Arthurian literature that diverges from the more familiar stories of Chrétien de Troyes and the Vulgate Cycle.

In Perlesvaus, Gawaine is portrayed as an almost larger-than-life figure, stronger and wittier than in many other romances, and the narrative often blends heroic action with exaggeration, dark humor, and surreal imagery. The chessboard scene reflects this tone perfectly: ordinary objects – here, a chessboard and oversized ivory pieces – are transformed into instruments of survival, highlighting both Gawaine’s resourcefulness and the story’s taste for tall-tale heroics. Scholars have noted that Perlesvaus frequently celebrates clever improvisation and physical prowess, and this episode is one of its most memorable examples of both.
