Introduction#

The Perilous Mount is a treacherous mountain appearing in Arthurian romance. It is associated with Sir Kahedins, who swore an oath to continue climbing until he reached its summit.

Kahedins’ Vow#

The mountain serves as the object of a knightly challenge and personal vow.

Like many perilous places in Arthurian literature, the mount represents more than a physical obstacle. The ascent reflects endurance, determination, and the testing of knightly resolve.

The romances provide little further detail concerning the mountain itself, leaving its dangers largely undefined.

Nature of the Place#

The title “Perilous” places the mountain within the wider tradition of dangerous Arthurian landscapes: perilous bridges, perilous forests, perilous cemeteries, and perilous fords.

Such locations often function as thresholds or tests through which knights prove courage and worth.

Significance#

Though only briefly mentioned in the surviving tradition, the Perilous Mount reflects the recurring Arthurian theme of the difficult ascent—both literal and symbolic.

The mountain’s importance lies less in geography than in the vow attached to it.
